Hello! We are the Enginerds.

We are a senior design project team in Auburn University's Biosystems Engineering Department.

Our Project

Yarbrough Elementary School Consultation for Water & Energy Consumption Reduction

Yarbrough Elementary School in Auburn, Alabama asked the Enginerds to perform an energy consultation on their school grounds. The school needed our expertise to design solutions to reduce their electricity consumption, to reduce their water consumption, and to resolve storm water runoff issues on the school grounds.

The Client

The client, Yarbrough Elementary School (YES), teaches first through fifth grade students on the northwest side of Auburn, AL. The principal of YES, Mr. Forester, approached the Enginerds to find solutions for the school's energy usage problems. He wished to reduce water and energy usage as well as mitigate the school's runoff problems. He particularly mentioned a runoff problem on the large playground area situated on a hill above the school building; strong rainstorms caused the mulch to wash off of the playground, burdening the school with the expense of replacing it annually.

Project Goals

Yarbrough Elementary School, a member of the Auburn City School System, accommodates 65 faculty and staff and 575 students from grades three to five. The school board recently sought assistance from the Enginerds to minimize the school’s energy and water footprint as well as introduce complementary education initiatives for students. This project will propose a design solution to reduce water and energy consumption by 10%. The stormwater design solutions will utilize the current topography and practical landscaping to reduce excess outdoor water demand and eliminate erosion caused by runoff. In conjunction with the proposed design solution, STEM learning activities will expose students to relevant Biosystems Engineering topics. As the school’s project budget is approximately $5,000 per year, the project will propose a 5-year plan in order to achieve the intended results and stay within the school’s budget.
